This preserve is home to almost 200 species of birds, including waterfowl, wading, and birds of prey.

The Preserve sits on approximately 140 acres inside the Henderson Water Treatment Facility.  There are nine ponds for bird watching with surrounding paved and dirt paths.

There are many species of duck such as the northern shoveler, green wing, cinnamon and blue wind teal, pintail, bufflehead and one of the most beautiful of all North American ducks, the wood duck.  There are best seen in the winter and early spring.  Winter also brings in the geese (Canada, now and Ross) and returning tundra swan.  You will also see Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and Northern Harriers.  The desert species that are there all year are things such as verdin, Abert’s towhee, Gambel’s quail, greater roadrunner and crissal thrasher.

In order to really see the birds you will be doing a lot of walking so be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.  Cameras and binoculars are also recommended, if you don’t have binoculars, the Preserve has some available for you to borrow.  Free guided bird watching classes are also available so if you are interested, and have the time, you may want to check them out.
